UVES spectra of young brown dwarfs in Cha I: radial and rotational velocities
نویسندگان
چکیده
Based on high-resolution UVES spectra we found that the radial velocity (RV) dispersion of nine of twelve known young bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Cha I dark cloud is 2.0 kms, i.e. significantly smaller than the RV dispersion of T Tauri stars in Cha I (3.6 km/s) and only slightly larger than the dispersion of the surrounding molecular gas (1.2 km/s) (Mizuno et al. 1999). This result indicates that the majority of these brown dwarfs are not ejected with high velocity out of a dense region as proposed by some formation scenarios for brown dwarfs. The mean RV values are consistent with the objects being kinematic members of Cha I. The RV dispersion of the T Tauri stars confined to the Cha I region is based on a compilation of T Tauri stars with known RVs from the literature plus three T Tauri stars observed with UVES and unpublished RVs for nine T Tauri stars. Time–resolved spectroscopy revealed RV variations for five out of nine of the bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in Cha I, which could be due to orbiting planets or surface features. Furthermore we derived rotational velocities v sin i and the Lithium 6708 Å equivalent width.

Multiplicity , kinematics and rotation rates of very young brown dwarfs in Cha
We have studied twelve very young (1–5Myr) bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Cha I star forming region in terms of their kinematic properties, the occurrence of multiple systems among them as well as their rotational characteristics. Based on high-resolution spectra taken with UVES at the VLT (8.2m), radial and rotational velocities have been measured. A kinematic study of the sample ...

We present a precise kinematic study of very young brown dwarfs in the Cha I cloud based on radial velocities (RVs) measured with UVES at the VLT. The kinematics of the brown dwarfs in Cha I are compared to the kinematics of T Tauri stars in the same field based on UVES measurements for very low-mass ones and based on RVs from the literature. In comparison with a former paper (Joergens & Guenth...

We present results of a radial velocity (RV) survey for planets and brown dwarf companions to very young brown dwarfs and (very) low-mass stars in the Cha I star forming cloud. Time-resolved high-resolution echelle spectra have been taken with UVES at the VLT between 2000 and 2004 of Cha Hα 1–8 and Cha Hα 12 (M6–M8), B34 (M5), CHXR 74 (M4.5) and Sz 23 (M2.5). The achieved precision of the relat...
متن کاملMedium-resolution optical spectroscopy of young stellar and sub-stellar M-dwarfs in the Cha I dark cloud
We obtained medium-resolution spectra of the bonafide brown dwarf Cha Hα 1, the five brown dwarf candidates Cha Hα 2 to 6, two additional late M-type brown dwarf candidates, all originally selected by Hα emission, and four previously known T Tauri stars, all located in Chamaeleon I. The spectral types of our targets range down to M8. We show their spectra and also list their IJK magnitudes from...
متن کاملRotational Periods of very Young Brown Dwarfs in Cha I
A photometric monitoring campaign of brown dwarfs in the Cha I star forming region in the i and R band revealed significant periodic variations of the three M6.5–M7 type brown dwarf candidates Cha Hα 2, 3 and 6 (Joergens et al. 2002). These are the first rotational periods for very young (1–5 Myr) brown dwarfs and among the first rotational periods for brown dwarfs at all. The relatively long p...
